What is an Electric Radiator?

Many types of electric heaters have the word ‘radiator’ in their name. However, a true radiator does exactly that, it radiates heat. Electric radiators such as ours deliver a high percentage of radiated heat rather than convected.

Cast Aluminium is the best material for the radiator body.

Cast Aluminium emits more gentle radiated heat. Aluminium is an excellent conductor of heat. Fast dispersion of heat into the room uses less energy. Beware ‘lightweight’ extruded aluminium products which will emit more convection leading to less comfort and higher running costs.

Technology Inside

To achieve quality radiated heat a radiator requires an even surface temperature. There are currently 3 x types of technology available:

Ceramic – Clay, Soapstone or Koalit Core.

Fluid – Oil/Gel/Glycol

Dry Technology – Elements heating the Aluminium directly.

All 3 x technologies are doing the same thing – trying to get an even surface temperature for radiated heat. Some take longer to heat up, some take longer to cool down.


To achieve comfort, you need a uniform dispersal of heat in the room. Radiated heat is the way to achieve maximum comfort.

Radiated Heat

There are 3 modes of heat transfer:

Conduction – Between the skin and the object via direct contact, i.e. an electric blanket

Convection – Contact between the air and the skin. Heat transported through the air by temperature differences. Hot air rises and cold air falls.

Radiation - All bodies emit radiation. This radiation is transferred from hot to cold bodies until equilibrium is achieved. No contact is needed for this phenomenon to occur. Heat from the sun is radiated heat.

There is comfort when the temperature of a room is very homogeneous in all its parts.

Lower Comfort = Higher Consumption

A radiators performance (consumption and comfort) is dependent on the quality of the surface exchange with the ambient air. The weight of the aluminium body is important for it to work at a low surface temperature which will improve comfort and reduce running costs.

Check the Weight

A greater weight of the aluminium means a higher percentage of radiated heat. Heat is distributed better and is less dry.

Bodies made from thin and light extruded aluminium result in more convection. Convected heat leads to a poorer dispersion of heat. Larger differences in temperature in parts of the room. i.e. with convection the difference in temperature between the top and bottom of the room can be around 6 degrees, so to achieve 20 degrees in the room you need to set the thermostat higher (to 26 degrees) to achieve 20 degrees at the bottom of the room (cold feet syndrome).
