ERS Top 6 Energy Saving Solutions for Your Home

With thoughts turning to Autumn, we look at the top 6 energy saving solutions for your home.

Switch Energy Supplier

Quite simply it pays to shop around. If you have never switched you could save £300 a year on your energy bill. There are many ways to compare energy suppliers and many comparison sites. With electricity, you pay a standing charge, which can vary but the most important thing is the price per k/Wh of your electric. Insist on finding this out. If you are not shopping around you could be paying 15-16p per unit. By shopping around, you can find 12p anywhere in the country. Even if you can’t be bothered to shop around, contact your existing supplier, you could get a cheaper deal from them.

Draught Excluders

There are several cheap and easy ways of draught proofing some areas. If you can feel cold air coming through the bottom or sides of your door, you can fit rubber or foam seals. At the bottom of the door you could fit a door brush. Key hole covers are a cheap way to stop cold air through the keyhole. A letterbox draught excluder is another simple way of stopping draughts. You could even make your own draught excluder for the bottom of the door.

Hot Water Thermostat

Hot water cylinders usually have a thermostat located towards the bottom. This should be set at between 60 and 65oC. This is hot enough to kill off harmful bacteria such as legionella. If it is set higher you can turn it down.

Energy Saving Lightbulbs

Energy saving lightbulbs are available in any size and for whatever light fittings you have. They have a longer lifespan than traditional incandescent and halogen light bulbs and use less power.

Eco Shower Head

Fitting an eco-shower head is one of the easiest and most effective ways of cutting your water usage. Eco shower heads aerate the water (mix air with the water). This means you use less water for the same shower. Spending less time in the shower also helps!

Energy Saving Electric Radiators

Turning down the thermostat by just one degree in a typical home could save you £85-£90 per year. This is true with whatever heating system, including a gas or oil central heating system. On a central heating system, you can just turn down your central thermostat which is usually located in your hallway. The problem with this is firstly it’s always measuring the temperature in the hall. So, if you want your living room at 20 degrees you need to have your hall (and other areas) at 20 degrees also.

Our electric radiators give you the same effect as a central heating system, same quality of heat but with better controllability. Each radiator is individually thermostatic and programmable, meaning you can set different temperature in different rooms and program for different times also.

As the UK moves away from traditional fossil fuels to more secure low carbon heating, electric is increasingly becoming an environmentally friendly option. Electricity can be produced from renewable sources such as solar or wind, making energy efficient electric radiators an eco-friendly heating solution.
