Are you stuck with old fashioned storage heaters and are thinking about upgrading to energy efficient electric radiators? Below we will discuss the advantages of Electric Radiators over Storage Heaters.

At Electric Radiator Solutions, we receive lots of enquiries from people with storage heaters and people who have moved to a property with storage heaters installed.

Storage Heaters

Storage Heaters have been a popular way of heating ‘off grid’ homes and flats since the 1950’s. They use an electricity tariff called economy 7 (sometimes economy 10 or total heat total control). For many years storage heating was the only realistic choice for electric heating. Storage heaters use heat retention bricks to store heat at night and then emit heat during the day. There are several problems with this.

Firstly, most people are out at work all day when the heat is being emitted. Then when they sit down in front of the TV on an evening, the storage heaters have run out of heat!

Secondly, the economy 7 tariff is misleading. It gives a ‘cheap’ reduced night rate but most people don’t realise that the day rate is inflated above standard rates! So, all your other appliances are using an expensive rate. Also, as mentioned above, when your storage heaters run out of heat on an evening, you need to switch on other forms of heating such as an electric fire, convector heater or fan heater, all using the inflated day rate. The result is that Economy 7 saves you nothing.

Electric Radiators

Modern energy efficient electric radiators not only look great with their slimline design, they use modern materials and the latest technology with thermostats and programmers to save you money. The best electric radiators such as the Curvo+ also have additional features such as motion sensors, open window detection and energy counters.

Storage Heaters vs Electric Radiators

The main difference between storage heaters and electric radiators is the level of control. With storage heaters, you have to predict the weather the day before and decide if you want to charge your storage heaters up or not. If you charge them up and don’t need the heat next day you can’t just switch them off, the heat will still come out!

Electric radiators are thermostatic so if the room is up to temperature, they will stop heating. Only kicking back in when the room temperature drops below your selected temperature. Also, the quality of heat is much better. Storage heaters emit mostly convected heat, which rises leaving the bottom of the room cold. Electric radiators use radiated and convected heat, leading to a much even room temperature and higher levels of comfort. Electric radiators are much more energy efficient leading to lower energy bills. In every aspect, electric radiators win hands down. Switch to 21st century heating today!
