We at Electric Radiator Solutions are keen to share our tips for keeping warm and healthy this winter.

1) Wear warm clothes. Layers are better than one thick item. Layers trap in the warm air and help your body regulate heat better than one thick layer. Clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres are best. If you go out, make sure to wear the correct footwear. Warm shoes or boots with nonslip soles and waterproof if it is wet.

2) Plenty of hot drinks – Tea/Flavoured teas/Warm milk/Coffee/Hot Chocolate/Hot Water/Hot Cordial (Apple & Blackcurrant/Orange)

3) Hot food & meals. It is well known that soup will warm you up and is also good for your health. A curry may sound obvious, but as well as being hot many contain spices with medicinal properties. Black pepper which keeps cold away, onion and garlic which boost the immune system and ginger which has a history of relieving sickness.<

Yoghurt is full of vitamins and friendly bacteria. Also mushrooms are beneficial for fighting off colds.

4) Keep curtains closed (unless its sunny then keep open to let the sun in!). An estimated 10% of heat loss occurs through windows.

5) Hot Water Bottles – cost from a few pounds upwards

6) Draught Excluders – Sausage Dog type from £5 or make your own from an old trouser leg stuffed with other old clothes such as socks or jumpers

7) Use residual heat from your kitchen and bathroom. Leave the oven door open after cooking but be careful if you have children. Also, leaving the bathroom door open when having a bath or leave the warm bath water in and the door open after you get out.

8) Try to keep active. Going for a walk on a cold crisp day will improve your circulation. Make sure you wear the correct clothing and shoes. When you come back in from the cold the house feels warm.

9) Electric Radiators – The advice is to keep a minimum temperature of 18 degrees – especially for older people. With an electric radiator, you set the temperature what you want the room to be and they kick in when it feels the room temperature is going to drop below this. If heating the whole house is a problem. Heat the living room during the day and bedroom at night. Don’t put furniture in front of your radiators, it will only block the heat! Only heat rooms you are using.
