Electric Heating for Flats

Electricity is becoming the most popular source for heating both new build flats and renovations these days. Developers and landlords are moving away from gas for various reasons. Gas can be expensive to install and requires annual maintenance. Also, with UK North Sea gas supplies dwindling, energy security has become an issue. The UK now imports more gas than it produces, much of which comes from Russia. Modern electric radiators are cheaper to buy, the installation costs are very low and are maintenance free.

Building regulations require much higher levels of insulation these days so buildings don’t need as much energy to heat them. Alongside this, energy efficient electric radiators are very economical to run due to accurate thermostats and programming ability.

Many existing flats have storage heaters fitted. For many years, these were the only option where gas wasn’t available. Storage heaters have many disadvantages beginning with the Economy 7 tariff. People are attracted to the ‘cheap’ night rate. However, they don’t realise that the day rate is inflated and more than standard rate tariffs. Also, in most cases, not all the electric and appliances are wired up to the cheap night rate. People mistakenly put there washing machine on at night but it is only the Storage heaters and hot water that are wired upto the cheap rate. Combine this with storage heaters running out of heat come evening time, when you need it most. Additional heating is required in the form of plug in fan heaters, electric fires or floor standing ‘radiators’ with wheels – all of which consume high levels of electric at a higher rate!

Storage heaters also suffer from a serious lack of control. If you switch them off, you have to wait a whole day without any heat and when charged up there’s no way of stopping the heat coming out! This problem is particularly bad in Spring & Autumn when temperatures fluctuate.

For landlords, tenants are lost because of high bills and because the place is too cold.

Our electric radiators are all individually thermostatic and programmable, and have many other energy saving features.  Enabling savings to be made by only heating the rooms that you are using. When specifying electric radiators, it is vital as with any heating system to get the correct size radiators for the room size or area you are heating. Treat electric radiators like central heating, you need one in every room/every area. If the room is large you may need more than one. The radiators are thermostatic so it’s never a mistake to over-specify. You can always turn them down and they will work well within themselves.

Don’t miss any areas out – You may think you just have a living room and a bedroom, but if the kitchen is off the living room open plan you will need to take into account this space. Same goes for corridors and hallways.

In a nutshell, electric radiators provide a comfortable, controllable heat. They are easy to fit and maintenance free. All of this and they are energy efficient. Perfect for heating your flat or any other space.

As the UK moves away from traditional fossil fuels to more secure low carbon heating, electric is increasingly becoming an environmentally friendly option. Electricity can be produced from renewable sources such as solar or wind, making energy efficient electric radiators an eco-friendly heating solution.
